Sterling, MA---It is only fitting that the lowest round ever shot in CGT history came during the lowest scoring event in CGT history. One day after a record setting first round in which 44 players shot par or better, Brian Lamberti shattered Sean O'Hair's course record 62 with a 10-under-par 61. His two-day total of 15-under leaves him two shots clear of first round leader Tele Wightman and Bill Link, who plays out of Sterling C.C. "Everything fell into place," said Lamberti, who matched his career low round of 61. "I felt like I could birdie every hole. It's all confidence. I was like, 'Wow, another birdie. And another birdie." Five-under beginning his round, Lamberti opened with consecutive birdies on no. 1 and 2. He then reeled off six more birdies on the next ten holes before bogeying no. 13. Three birdies on his final four holes, capped by a four-foot birdie putt and subsequent fist pump on the par-5 closing hole, leave him in position for his first victory on the CGT. Likewise for Bill Link, a regular roommate of Lamberti's who propelled himself into the final pairing with a bogey-free round of 8-under 63, his personal best at Sterling. Beginning on no. 3, he played the next eight holes 7-under. "I travel with him," said Link. "He looks at my swing. I look at his. That's how it is out here. " While Lamberti and Link rode early momentum, Tele Wightman struggled out of the gates, parring his first 11 holes. A birdie on no. 12 quickly reversed his fortunes, however. "I gained some momentum there," said Wightman, who then canned a 60-foot birdie bomb on no. 15, an 8-foot birdie out on no. 17 and a 30-foot eagle putt on no. 18. Wightman sits one shot ahead of Andy Bare, who followed his opening 64 with a 66. "I tried to get a little cute with some shots," said Bare, who has accumulated 11 birdies and an eagle thus far. "That's why it was 66 and not 64 again. But I'm pleased I was able to come back with another good round." Forty players survived the 36-hole cut of even par 142. Saturday's tee times begin at 7:30 am. A purse of $86,400 and a winner's prize are at stake in the final round. |
