Catch Me if You Can: Curl leapfrogs Dantas, holds off Doyle for Victory

Cranston, RI-Jeff Curl, playing in just his third Cleveland event, carded a final round 5-under 66 to erase a four shot deficit and capture the 3rd annual Cranston Open by a single shot. Curl finished 12-under, one shot ahead of Matt Doyle, who closed with three birdies in his final six holes but simply ran out of holes. Overnight leader Jeff Dantas tied for 3rd.

"I knew they were going to have to catch me on the back nine," said Curl, who birdied the 10th hole then added birdies on both par 5s, the 13th and 17th, to withstand Doyle's back nine charge.

"I hit it so good all week," added Curl, who collected $13,000 with the win. "All three days, I was in complete control of where my ball was going at all times."

The same can be said of Doyle, who hit 31 of 36 greens through two rounds but made one crucial mistake on the 9th hole. Facing a greenside bunker shot, Doyle blasted over the green and made double bogey, the only blemish he made during the final two rounds.

"I just had one hiccup on the 9th where I hit the wrong club out of the bunker," said Doyle, who opted for his 56 degree wedge instead of his usually reliable 60 degree.

Despite that blunder, Doyle matched Curl's birdie on the par-5, 13th then added another on the par-4, 16th to climb within one.

One group ahead, Curl reached the 550-yard par-5 17th hole in two shots, setting up an easy birdie to build a two-stroke cushion. Doyle, however, couldn't match Curl this time, as he failed to convert a six-foot birdie putt.

"I just wanted to give myself a chance and have a good time," said Doyle, who recorded his best finish of the season. "I almost had it."

Almost also applies to Dantas' final round, which inauspiciously began with four lip outs on the first four holes. On the par-4, 5th hole, a dogleg right, his tee shot caromed off a tree and went out of bounds. He made the turn in 1-over, tied for the lead with Curl, but couldn't capitalize on his superb ball striking, missing a four-foot par putt on the 15th hole and a seven-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

"I wasn't nervous at all," said Dantas who began the final round with a lead for the first time in a 54-hole event. "I was real comfortable. It was just a matter of a couple putts not dropping early on."

The Tour next travels to Sterling (MA) Country Club Aug. 8-10.
