Cromwell, CT---Matt Doyle just couldn't create
enough birdie opportunities down the stretch during round two of
the Buick Championship at TPC River Highlands on Friday.
As a result, his two-day total of 3-over-par 143
left three shots above the cut line.
"I didn't have my swing," said Doyle,
who carded rounds of 72-71 in his second PGA Tour appearance.
"I didn't knock anything close. But I hung in there and
battled."
Doyle began his round on the back nine, and made
the turn even par for his round. A birdie at the par-4 first
hole brought him to 1-over total. Narrow misses for birdies on
four of the next five holes, however, brought a sour close to a
day he envisioned with such promise.
"It's always out there for me if I play
well," he said.
Unlike Doyle's clutch performance during the
final round of last month's Cranston Open, where birdies
followed birdies, momentum was tough to come by.
"If I made a birdie, I made a par then a
bogey," said Doyle. "I couldn't get anything to
avalanche in the right direction. But that's alright. I'm going
to go try and Monday at Stowe and try to get in next week."
Joey Iaciofano, who opened with an 81, rebounded
with a 1-over 71.
Last year, fellow CGTer Eli Zackheim missed the
cut in the Buick Championship. Other CGTers to compete in the
Buick include Jim Salinetti and Bill Link
Doyle and Iaciofano's appearance in the Buick
marked the first time multiple CGTers competed in a PGA Tour
event since Steve Sokol and Geoff Sisk qualified for last year's
U.S. Open.
Second round leader Justin Rose fashioned a
7-under 63 on Friday and sits at 12-under, four clear of first
round leader Ben Curtis and Kevin Sutherland.
