Link misses cut at PGA Tour event
Final 9 derails hopes of playing the weekend
Endicott, NY-Following an opening round of 1-under par 71 at
En-Joie Golf Course, Bill Link, of Acton, MA, was in position to
survive the 36 hole cut at this week’s other PGA Tour
stop, the B.C. Open. He further solidified his chances of
advancing to the weekend with an opening nine of even par in
Friday’s second round.
Four bogies on the
front side-his final nine-were simply too much to overcome,
however, as Link’s second round 76 had him on the outside
looking in when the two day cut fell at 2-under par.
This marks the
second time Link, a graduate of Holy Cross, has Monday qualified
for a PGA Tour event. In 2001, he qualified for the now Buick
Championship at the TPC of River Highlands in Cromwell, CT. He
also missed the cut there, carding rounds of 74-74.
Cleveland Golf
Tour players have had a considerable amount of success in Monday
qualifiers this summer, both on the Nationwide and PGA Tours. In
June, Eli Zackheim, Kyle Gallo, Jesse Fitzgerald, and Sean
O’Hair Monday qualified for Nationwide events. Only Gallo and
Fitzgerald were able to make the cut, though, finishing 30th
and 45th, respectively at the Reese’s Classic.
Steve Sokol and
Geoff Sisk survived the ultimate qualifier, as they both
advanced through local and sectional qualifying to earn spots in
the U.S. Open. Sokol narrowly missed the cut while Sisk managed
trying final round conditions to finish in a tie for 40th
place.
