Bartolacci shatters Cranston Country
Club course record with opening 63
Cranston, RI-Christian Bartolacci rewrote Cranston Country
Club’s history books on the strength of an eight birdie, no
bogey performance en route to grabbing the opening round lead of
the Cranston Open. Dan Janton lies two shots back after a
6-under par 65, which tied the previous course record set by
Bill Link and Geoff Sisk in last year’s tournament. Long time
Rhode Island standout Mike Capone carded a 4-under par 67 while
Bart McCarthy continues his impressive play with a 3-under 68.
Meanwhile, Cleveland Golf Tour money leader Sean O’Hair fired a
69 and stands tied for fourth with Ryan Ouelette and Charles
Hong.
“I hit it exactly
where I wanted to on every hole,” said Bartolacci, who made the
turn in 3-under par 32 then added three more birdies and an
eagle on the par 5, 17th hole to complete his record
breaking day.
“I’ve got a long
way to go,” admitted Bartolacci, who became the fifth Cleveland
player to either break or tie a course record this season.
“These guys aren’t going to lay down for me.”
One-over par
through five holes, Dan Janton altered his putting routine and
decided to close his eyes while he putted for the remainder of
the round.
“Drastic times
call for drastic measures,” said Janton, who recorded seven
birdies from the 6th hole to the clubhouse on the way
to carding his lowest round of the season.
Mike Capone, fresh
off of his win in the Rhode Island Open yesterday, notched four
birdies in a six hole stretch on the back nine to offset a
1-over par through seven start. “The golf course is in great
condition,” said Capone, who honed his skills at Cranston as a
junior.
A host of players
find themselves at 1-under par 70, including recently crowned
Greater Bangor Open Champion Matt Donovan, 2003 Providence Open
Champion Mike Carbone and Ramon Franco, the brother of PGA Tour
star Carlos Franco.
With 84 players in the field, this week’s purse of
$68,400 is the highest in Cleveland Golf Tour history. Following
play tomorrow, the top 30 players and ties will advance to
Saturday’s final round, with a winner’s check of $12,500 at
stake. |
